Keywords Defined

In the world of affiliate internet marketing, a keyword is a formal way of describing a word or a phrase entered into a search engine to return a search result. For example, if you wanted to purchase a pair of shoes to match a red dress, you could launch a search engine such as Google, and type in the word “shoes”. In this instance, “shoes” would be the keyword. This is shown below:

While you would be likely to generate millions of results (in this instance, 594 million results!) for the term “shoes”, it may take a long time to sift through these pages and locate the right type and color of shoes. You could spend hours looking at pages of sport shoes, children’s shoes, dance shoes and so on before you come close to finding a suitable match.

A good way to improve this is to use a more specific keyword such as “red shoes”. In fact, this could be extended further to be “red platform shoes” (assuming you are actually looking for red platform shoes). Searching for multiple words or a phrase is commonly referred to as a Long Tail Keyword. By searching for a more specific phrase, the chances of finding a pair of red platform shoes are greatly improved.

What is Keyword Research?

Keyword research is carried out by internet marketers to determine what words or phrases their potential customers might be searching for. These terms can then feature on the business owner’s website so that a search engine can match the term searched to the most relevant result. Let’s use “catering” as an example. A caterer based in New York might want to attract new customers to his or her website. This particular caterer specializes in function catering and can cater for:

  • spit roast
  • dinner parties
  • cocktail parties

Each of these types of functions could potentially be a keyword, but how would the caterer know which exact words to target?  The answer is: by doing some keyword research. This will allow the caterer to find out what his or her potential customers are typing into search engines, and how many searches are generated each month. The benefit in finding out this information is that the caterer may devote greater marketing efforts towards the types of functions that more customers are interested in.

How to Conduct Keyword Research

The most effective way to carry out keyword research is to use a keyword tool. There are both free and paid keyword tools available and both can be easily accessed by business owners. Major search engines, such as Google, offer their own free tools. Paid tools, such as Market Samurai, can usually be licensed for a year at a time and can offer a number of additional benefits for analyzing keyword data. Its Time To Get Organized!

If you’ve decided to embark on the rewarding journey of becoming an affiliate marketer, you will probably feel a rush of excitement as various product and website ideas occupy your thoughts each day. Affiliate internet marketing

While this type of creative inspiration is invaluable, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by not only your own ideas but also by the vast amounts of information you’ll receive. To make the most of any affiliate internet marketing course, it is very important to balance out your formal education with practical application of new concepts learned. The best advice I can offer here is that a little bit of organization can definitely go a long way!

Getting organized with your affiliate internet marketing education may involve some or all of the following tasks:

  • Setting up a daily or weekly routine for both theory and practice
  • Attending webinars or catching up on recordings
  • Tracking your progress
  • Finding suitable affiliate products
  • Creating a schedule of marketing activities to implement
  • Managing various account login details, passwords and affiliate links
  • Business administration tasks

We will explore a few of these tasks in greater below.

Creating a Routine

When you’re starting out, it may be hard to know how much time to allocate to each of the tasks above. My advice would be to set up a work plan anyway and fine tune it as you go. One suggestion you could try is to allocate 50% of your available time to study/education and the other 50% to practical application. For example, if you have 90 minutes to spare each evening after work, you would allocate your time as follows:

– 45 minutes: study/education (eg. webinars, reading course notes, revising)

– 45 minutes: practical (eg. article writing, research, signing up for affiliate programs etc)

Tracking Your Progress

A good internet marketing course should start you off with a comprehensive guide for beginners and if you set up a consistent daily routine, you should be up and running in no time, right? Well, this sounds right in theory but it rarely happens that smoothly. There is a small element of “life” getting in the way which can disrupt your routine and throw you off course if you’re not prepared.

One of the practical ways around this is to keep a blog journal where you can record your progress and schedule future activities. I keep a blog journal where I make notes in four sections:Blog journal

  1. General notes: record activities completed and create to- do lists
  2. Hints & Tips: general tips and shortcuts
  3. Webinar notes: lecture-style notes from webinars you attend
  4. Future study: concepts that you will park for a future date

Managing Accounts & Passwords

Even the most organized internet marketer can become inundated with the number of accounts that you’ll acquire over time. A good way to manage a large number of login details and passwords is to set up an Account Register. This is simply a spreadsheet where you can store your various account details, passwords and related email addresses/websites. It’s also handy to upload this to Google Documents so that you can access it anywhere and if anything happens to your computer, your details won’t be lost.
